Newport Oregon

First, a note on Questen's interview. I tried uploading it six times last night. No luck. I will try once more. If it doesn't work. I'm moving on.

On the last day of our vacation, we drove over to the Oregon coast. This was our first glimpse of the Ocean. It was misty but beautiful.

We ate at a little restrant called Mo's. They say Mo's is famous. It was good but we ate at the second restrant, instead of the original and I wish we had tried the original.
This was the view from the window as we ate. Every once in a while, a sea lion would go by. I tried so hard to get a picture, but the creature was not obeying.
This is another picture of the port next to Mo's.
This is the first light house we went to. It is the Yaquina Bay Lighthouse. It was the oldest building in Newport. It wasn't just a lighthouse. It was a families home too. The Lighthouse board hired keeper was Charles Pierce. He was paid $1000 per year. He and his wife, Sarah, had seven children in that house. There was no electricity and rainwater was collected in a cistern, they pumped it by hand to the kitchen. But alas, the light from the lighthouse was not visible as needed, so the government built a new one. It was only in that use for four years.

The U. S. Lifesaving Service crew (which became the Coast Gard Later) used it as headquarters for a few years.

Then the house became withered and unused.

This is a picture in front of the lighthouse. We are looking through a pine tree.
The bridge. By the Port. To the side of the lighthouse.

The house was scheduled for demolition in 1934. Locals formed a Historical Society and preserved it from demolition. In 1970 a major renovation project began. The historical society provided period furnishings. This is the kitchen in the lighthouse. There's the pump. Isn't it the cutest kitchen!!
There is the butter churner. They cooked on a wood stove.
Here's her pantry. Which if you ask me, doesn't look big enough to hold the kind of food a women in those day would need to keep on hand. I love the rounded wall. I thought it was for the stair case, but it wasn't. the other bed room was like that too.
Look at that piano. I want that piano!

This is true- When the house was weathered and unused a group of children went in to play in the house. This included a little girl named Mariel. She was left behind in the house alone. The other children heard her scream and ran back to the house. There was blood down the hall and stairs. They never did find Mariel! If you look in this picture, you will see her. See by the window?
Ahhhhhhhh!
Ahhhhhhhhh! There she is...... Oh wait a minute that's me. I'm standing on the stairs that lead up to the light. It was a little eerie.
There's my cute Shaner. Oh and by the way. I'm sure It was just his Shadow in the room. Or was it...
